Directory browsing bug and suggestion

Great plug-in! I just discovered it earlier today and have been very impressed.

I have noticed a problem with the browser. If you click on a directory to enter it, then use the browser's "back" button to go back to the previous directory (rather than the "back to standard folder" link), browseamp still sees you as being in the folder you entered. If you then try to enter a different directory (on the same level as the first one you entered), it trys to look for it as a subdirectory of the first.

Perhaps this could be fixed by a change in directory-handling. Rather than maintaining a "current directory" on the server, perhaps all "in-a-subdirectory" pages could make relative links instead. The plug-in would always operate in the music root folder, and clients would specify a full path for directories and files relative to that music root folder. This would also make it possible for multiple users to talk to BrowseAmp without use of defined users and permissions. Accessing files on different drives could also be accomplished with this method...

Also, it would be helpful to have a "show files with this extension" setting in the GUI config in addition to the INI file.

Thanks!

-Tom

[email protected]

I'm not sure if this is a good way to navigate through a folder tree.

- The URL length is limited in the most browsers (support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q208/4/27.ASP)

- where do you set "real" root directory to work relative from? How would this work with different drives?

Ideas?

[email protected]
http://www.browseamp.com

Hmmm... The URL length is a good point. I hadn't thought of that. I guess I was operating under the assumption that most people would locate their files fairly close to the "standard folder."

In the first message, by "music root," I was referring to the "standard MP3 folder." I guess I used the wrong name. Oops.

For changing the actual volume you're operating from, I would anticipate a URL such as "/browser.html?dir=D/one/two", where you're browsing inside the "two" folder, which is in the "one" folder, which is located in the root of the "D:" drive.

If my thoughts about setting it up in this fashion will cause URL length problems, is there any other way of fixing the browser-back-button problem?

[email protected]

Another point is, that I want to hide drives and directories from the normal user to keep a minimum of privacy for the server...

I have some ideas on that problem and I'm going to check this soon. More infos then...

[email protected]
http://www.browseamp.com

Why not "cache" all the directory structure and files every hour or so, or even better: by adding a new option at the options screen to re-cache?

Then assign CRCs to each song and use that info to queue songs!

P.S.: What is going with the HTML page-compression thing? Oh... I know your answer: "What is going with the new forum"... Well, I must first fix my skin... You broke it you know (these skin-brakes I know sometimes can't be avoided, but the outcome is rewarding for me, I like the new features very much!)

[email protected]
http://www.saxtus.gr/

BTW: If you cache dir/file info, can't you speed-up the search function?

That way, search input box can always be global and doesn't need to search only the current directory and below... (I hate that!)

Also (if you find time - this isn't necessary) add a new checkbox for each user profile: To be logged or not

That's all for today...

Mike.

[email protected]
http://www.saxtus.gr/

What is going with the new forum?

Ok, ok - I have not found a good gzip compression component and I don't want to reinvent the wheel... Anyway that feature is not high priority because most people use BrowseAmp in a LAN.

I also won't cache directory information (weren't we recently talking about dynamics?). I don't see an advantage in that. (I like to search only in subdirs!)

[email protected]
http://www.browseamp.com
