Simple Touchscreen Skin

I thought I'd share some pics of the skin I've been working on for use on some little touchscreen PCs around the house.

I've kept it simple, and it's basically just a simplified version of the base skin. The smallest of the touchscreens is 640x480, so the whole thing's pretty small. There's no options screen as I don't want people in the house making changes to the config - I'll do that through Winamp. I'd be happy to share the source if anyone wants to try it.

The idea is to run Winamp in different "zones" round the house, 3 or 4 of them, and be able to control them with touchscreens in the wall. One of the screens is wireless, which I think is pretty cool  :) As you can see these screenshots are taken from the "Office" zone, and there'll be others for Bedroom, Kitchen, Lounge, and "Whole House" (gets piped into all rooms).

The album cover is a cheat - it's an iframe with an ASP page generated by a different web server (IIS) that generates the IMG path from the currently playing song file name, which it gets using WinampCOM.

I'm still playing with it (and may rewrite it for Browseamp 2). Any comments/suggestions?

Here's the main screen:

Looks good! What sort of "little touchscreen PC" are you using? That is an odd size for the things I'm thinking of.

Hi Steve,
I wrote my pages (to be posted soon too) to work on a 640x480 touchscreen. I use Iframes for almost every control and display so that the refreshes are "locallized" - this is a much cleaner display (no flashing) in my opinion. I'm having trouble getting the search function to work properly though. The search form is on the parent page and I want it to display the results in the Iframe where the playlist displays. You think you might be able to lend a hand?

Azimuth: Thanks! The PCs are:

1 x Panasonic CF-01 (http://pencomputing.com/frames/pana_cf01.html). This is the one with a wireless LAN card in it. It detaches from the base you can see in the photo.

2 x Fujitsu Point 510 (http://pencomputing.com/features/fujitsus.html), which I'm hoping to fit into the wall :)

They're all really low spec end-of-line stuff, but they've got enough power to run a Windows Terminal Services client so that's how I use them.

Aaron: That looks fantastic! Ages ago, before I discovered Browseamp, I wrote something similar (but not as good) using WinampCOM, VB, and ASP. I had loads of iframes too for the reasons you mention. The problem I had at the time was that on the touchscreens, which weren't running WTS at the time, it was just too slow. With WTS though it's fine now, so I agree that iframes are the way to go.

In fact now I come to think of it I used a hidden iframe that refreshed every second to check the status of Winamp. If anything had changed (different track, stopped playing, whatever) it would pick up some Javascript that refreshed the parent page. So you'd get nearly instant updates whenever anything changed. It was quite a big load on the client though!

I see in your tabs you've got "Control" screens - would that be X10 style home control by any chance? That's what this is all part of in our house - we run Homeseer :) I haven't written the touchscreen interface for it yet though.

I'd be happy to lend a hand if you think it'll help!

Cheers,
Steve

Steve,
I use a ton of X-10 in the house. I use HomeSeer to control it all and use RF & 802.11b comms with RF remotes and web pages to control it all.
It would be great to work with you on it since I'm a beginner with ASP/VB and know nothing of JS. All of my pages are ASP and some have an HTML wrapper (Iframes) to display the tabs. I will eventually convert them all to use Iframes for each graphic so the refreshes are locallized.

Here's the shots of some of my other control screens:

Wow! That looks fantastic! It looks like you're doing some pretty similar things to me. I've got various X10 (and other non-X10) devices all over the place including the aquariums, like you :)

I've also spent quite a while encoding my DVDs to DivX files so I can have them online in a similar jukebox setup. I was using ShowShifter but now that Winamp supports playing video it looks like I might switch to using Winamp for both audio and video. It would certainly make for a less complicated setup. BrowseAmp seems quite happy to handle video files in Winamp too. One of the hurdles I saw in doing this was being able to jump around in the video - so I've just put together a clickable asp progress bar (in another iframe). It works for both video and audio files - see attached pic. I've been toying with the idea of some sort of jog dial, but maybe that would just look messy...

Anyway, looking forward to working with you on some of this stuff  B)

What do you both use for that tabbed interface? I'm just using 4 frames now, but, that looks a lot cleaner.

Tabs? I don't have any tabs! The links across the top just link to different pages...

You could make it look & behave like tabs just by putting different graphics across the top of each page. I don't know if that's how Aaron's done it.

Oops! The tabs are only Aaron's! I was confused!

I've been looking around for the small touchscreens you mentioned, and, they all seem to be extinct! Are those like the Audrey's that would be had on e-bay (used and refurbed)?

Yeah, they're all extinct. The only way to get them is from warehouse clearances, second hand, that kind of thing. I has to import mine across the pond (I'm in the UK). The CF-01 came from Texas - took a month or two, and the Pt510s from Canada - took an astonishing 4 months to arrive!

The 510s came from this site:

http://www.positivesale.com/

..although I don't know whether there are any left. Also, be warned that a few people have had problems getting hold of the devices having handed over their money. The guy that runs the site blamed it on the Canadian postal system. Mine did arrive in the end...!

Good luck!

Yes, the ePods1 are hard to find, eBay is the best source. They will cost you around $150-160.

Attached is my HACT v1.8 touchscreen system made for HomeSeer (home automation) It will show you how I do the tabs on the screen.

enjoy!
